親愛的小文：

南太平洋有十四個小島叫薩摩亞（samoaisagroupof14islandsinthesouthpacificocean.），東邊的一堆屬於美國，叫americansamoa，西邊的叫westernsamoa（西薩摩亞），是個小國家，只有臺灣的十三分之一大，人口十八萬，它出產的三種主要東西，念起來都有點口吃（結巴，stammer）：

一、bananas（香蕉）——nana

二、cacao（可可）——caca

三、coconuts（椰子）——coco

一結結巴巴，就扯不清了，果然出了麻煩。

可可（cacao）是做巧克力（chocolate）和可可粉的，但可可粉的英文是cocoa，這個字看起來好像是coconuts（椰子）做出來的，所以大家都叫做椰子粉，其實只是可可粉，不是椰子粉。（becauseofamistakeinspelling,probablymadebyenglishimportersmanyyearsago,thesebeansbecameknownascocoabeansinenglish-scausesmanypeopletothinkthebeanscomefromthecoconutpalmtreeinsteadofthecacaotree.）

samoa這地方氣溫很怪，十二月最熱，七月最冷（decemberisthehottestmonthandjulythecoldest.）。samoa人喜歡打cricket（板球），但不喜歡打cricket（蟋蟀），板球和蟋蟀，在英文中同一個字。

男女多穿一種叫lava-lava的裙子，其實就是一塊布，捲成裙子。（mostsamoanmenandsomewomenwearonlyalava-lava,apieceofclothwrappedaroundthewaistlikeaskirt.somewearablouseorshirtwiththeirlava-stofthewomenweardresses,oraskirtandblouse.）

在國會里開會也穿裙子。

他們的囚犯白天不坐牢，白天照常做自己的事，晚上才到牢裡報到。並且監獄也沒有鐵欄杆（prisonersliveinjailwithoutbars.），房子比平常住的還像樣，因為他們平常只住四面通風的fale（open-sidedfale），是用椰子樹做材料搭起來的。（thepeopleliveinopen-sidedfale（house）yrolldownpalmleafblindswhenitrains.）

中國古話說「畫地為牢」（todrawacircleonthegroundforaprison,aswasdoneinthe「goodolddays」）、說「夜不閉戶」（theresnoneedtoclosedoorsatnight.）……這些世界大同的標準，西薩摩亞人都做到了。

西薩摩亞人並沒有錢，他們每人每年只有七十五美金，就是每月六塊美金（每天兩毛錢），但他們不需要錢。

《金銀島》（treasureisland）的作者斯蒂文森（stevenson）九十年前死在西薩摩亞。只活了四十四歲（他的太太比他大十一歲），死前他寫了一首《安魂曲》（requiem）。（requiem-ssforthereposeofadepartedsoulorsouls,安魂祭（安去世靈魂的彌撒祭）。settingofthemassforthedead,安魂曲（即死者彌撒祭時所奏之曲）的一段樂譜。also,apieceoflikecharacterforotherwords,又指吊歌、輓歌。ygrandmusicalserviceofhymninhonorofthedead,對於死者表示敬意的嚴肅音樂演奏或壯麗的聖歌。）（中國的文學家陶淵明也寫過《自祭文》。）爸爸把它翻譯給你看：
