這是一本在寫作過程中帶給我許多樂趣的書，講述的是一個在俗世大獲全勝，同時又努力事奉上帝的女人。她作為女權歷史學家口中的「博學之人」，是少數幾個為學習知識的權利而努力爭取的女人；對於都鐸的史學家來說，她是建立了家族的「女家長」；在不那麼恭敬的傳記作家筆下，她又是來自地獄的「老婊子」。為讀者塑造這樣一個從孩提時就篤信上帝安排的命運，而在成年後敢於為兒子奪取英格蘭王位的女人，對我來說很有挑戰，也充滿樂趣。小說中有些內容是真實的歷史，有些是推測，還有些純屬虛構。尤其是我們並不知道是誰殺死了倫敦塔中的王子們，甚至不知道他們是否真的死在了倫敦塔中。顯然，對王位擁有合法繼承權的那些人——理查德三世、白金漢公爵、瑪格麗特·博福特和她的兒子——從他們的死亡中獲利最大。
