butthiswasnotjurgen'sintention;hewantedtoseesomethingoftheworld.theeel-breederoffjaltringhadanuncleatoldskjagen,whowasafisherman,butalsoaprosperousmerchantwithshipsuponthesea;hewassaidtobeagoodoldman,anditwouldnotbeabadthingtoenterhisservice.oldskjagenliesintheextremenorthofjutland,asfarawayfromthehunsbydunesasonecantravelinthatcountry;andthisisjustwhatpleasedjurgen,forhedidnotwanttoremaintilltheweddingofmartinandelse,whichwouldtakeplaceinaweekortwo.
theoldfishermansaiditwasfoolishtogoaway,fornowthatjurgenhadahomeelsewouldverylikelybeinclinedtotakehiminsteadofmartin.
jurgengavesuchavagueanswerthatitwasnoteasytomakeoutwhathemeant-theoldmanbroughtelsetohim,andshesaid:

jurgenturnedthesethingsoverinhismindallnight.somethingwasworkingwithinhim,hehardlyknewwhatitwas,butitwasevenstrongerthanhisloveforelse;andsohewenttomartin's,andwhathesaidanddidtherewaswellconsidered.heletthehousetomartinonmostliberalterms,sayingthathewishedtogotoseaagain,becausehelovedit.andelsekissedhimwhensheheardofit,forshelovedmartinbest.
