"noreally,"repliedelizabeth;"ithinktherecannotbetoolittlesaidonthesubject."

"mr.darcy!"repeatedelizabeth,inutteramazement.

"oh,yes!hewastocometherewithwickham,youknow,butgraciousme!iquiteforgot!ioughtnottohavesaidawordaboutit.ipromisedthemsofaithfully!whatwillwickhamsay?itwastobesuchasecret!"

"ifitwastobesecret,"saidjane,"saynotanotherwordonthesubject.youmaydependuponmyseekingnofurther."

"oh!certainly,"saidelizabeth,thoughburningwithcuriosity;"wewillaskyounoquestions."

"thankyou,"saidlydia,"forifyoudid,ishouldcertainlytellyouall,andthenwickhamwouldbeangry."

jane'sdelicatesenseofhonourwouldnotallowhertospeaktoelizabethprivatelyofwhatlydiahadletfall;elizabethwasgladofit;—tillitappearedwhetherherinquirieswouldreceiveanysatisfaction,shehadratherbewithoutaconfidante.
